BCC KNOWLEDGE & RESOURCES
Financial statements & year-end
A useful year-end discussion starts with organized records and a clear list of open questions. This preparation checklist is not a prescribed disclosure list, an audit program or a completed financial statement engagement.
Bring the records into one working picture
For a private engagement, organize your trial balance, ledger and supporting schedules. Identify unreconciled balances, missing documents and transactions requiring judgment. Explain the period covered and any change in systems or business activity so the review starts with the correct context.
Separate bookkeeping from reporting judgments
Recording a transaction and deciding how to present it in the financial statements are different tasks. List questions about cut-off, estimates, classification and accounting policies. BCC can then assess which supporting documents and applicable requirements are needed; this page supplies no entity-specific journal entries.
Prepare Notes to FS as part of the reporting discussion
Gather information about the entity, material accounting policies, significant transactions and relevant estimates for the reviewer. Notes should reflect the actual financial statements and applicable framework. Copying a note from another entity does not establish completeness or suitability. Do not treat this short preparation list as the required notes for every entity.
Coordinate the close with the intended use
Tell BCC whether the statements are being prepared for management, a lender, a statutory submission or another purpose, and whether an audit engagement is involved. Flag the dates supplied by the relevant institution for verification. The review can then coordinate reporting, tax reconciliation and submission questions without assuming one rule covers all three.
Scope of this page
This is a preparation and source-navigation resource, not a technical advisory or a determination of your obligations. It contains no approved tax rates, filing deadlines or entity-specific accounting treatment. Visit Insights & Advisories for the firm’s controlled publication library.
